About Dr. David Pittle
Dr. Pittle, out of wide experience, believes people in emotional distress have the solutions already available to them. All that any counselor or therapist can do is to help people access their ability to change. David brings over forty years of experience and a wide variety of tools to this task: Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, Transactional Analysis, Spirituality and Mindfulness, Hypnotherapy and Sex Counseling among them.
David refuses to join the latest therapy cults, but does use the latest research-based, end-results oriented tools. Competent counselors (psychotherapists) are known, not for the "sect" of psychotherapy they espouse, but for always looking at the latest information available in the field and learning to apply that knowledge on behalf of clients.
The client's needs must always be the focus of counseling.
David received his primary training in counseling or psychotherapy under the mentorship of Drs. Roy Fairchild, Ted Stein, and John Bachman and received his Masters degree from San Francisco Theological Seminary. For one year, he interned as a counselor at San Quentin Prison for Men, helping inmates change their lives and prepare for successful transition and integration into their life after release.
During this period, David began his studies of Transactional Analysis and took the initial training leading to practice of this form of counseling.
Following graduation, with his Master's degree in hand, Dr. Pittle was asked by the Presbyterian deonomination to serve for two years at the University of Brasilia, Brazil where he was both a instructor of counseling and worked with protestant students discovering their own spirituality. Upon returning to the U.S., he worked for the counseling offices of Harvard, Rdcliffe and MIT in Boston/Cambridge, MA, counseling with students.
Moving to Akron, Ohio led to a position as instructor at the University of Akron teaching personal psychology, as well as management and supervisory psychology. This was also his opportunity to complete his doctoral studies through an independent program of the university.
In Akron he completed his studies in Transactional Analysis under the tutelage of Dr. William Holloway, but also became aware of the work of Dr. Albert Ellis, and began studies in Rational Emotive Therapy with Dr. Ellis. David joined the Akron Sex Forum and studied sex therapy under supervision of a Masters and Johnson sex therapist supervisor, eventually becoming credentialed and joining the newly formed AASECT and attaining a clinical membership in the American Assoc. of Marriage and Family Therapists.
In 1975, David and his family moved to San Rafael, Calif. There he began a practice where he incorporated all these skills into a cohesive body of work. Of course, continued growth in Rational Emotive Therapy (Now called REBT) through studies with Albert Ellis and others led to Advanced Certification.
For over forty years David has pursued excellence in counseling. At no time in this long career has Dr. Pittle allowed himself to rest on old knowledge. He continues to learn and practice, applying the latest, best research and knowledge to help clients have the most authentic life possible. Self-actualization is a much used and abused term, but David's goal is nothing less than that clients take charge of their own lives and make their own choices–seeing the breadth of possibilities available to them. In other words, "Self-Actualization".
David is a clinical or certified member of a number of professional organizations:
The American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists
The International Transactional Analysis Association
American Mental Health Counselors Association
American Association of Pastoral Counselors
Society of the Scientific Study of Sex
National Board of Clinical Hypnotherapists
In addition to English, David speaks a little Spanish, Japanese (Having taken his university degree at a Japanese university; among his delights is Japanese art) and a smattering of Portuguese. He pursues photography as his primary hobby.
Life is an adventure to be experienced, and enjoyed.
